Let's face it, when you're that poor (and how many of us have been there) that you suck your own teeth to stop the belly cramps... a bad decision is bound to be made somewhere along the way.
Does it excuse this? Of Course Not
But I also don't think it's the all-founded indictment that people like Ted Rall want to put off either. If you're an editor paying Chinese sweatshop wages for your creative talent, you don't get to cry out with righteous effrontery when it turns out that work isn't going to win you a Pulitzer.
You get what you pay for, whether that's in money or effort. Just as Day didn't put forth as much work as was needed to avoid scandal, so too did the people hiring him and others fail to put forth effort to either save their dieing industry or to pay their talent what it was worth in the first place.
